Armelle de Sainte Marie
Born in 1968 in Versailles, Armelle de Sainte Marie has lived and worked in Marseille since the end of the 90s.
She develops in her painting and drawings a proliferating universe with ambiguous geographies, stretched between almost-figuration and abstraction, in which the forms – borrowing from the mineral, plant or animal kingdoms – seem to themselves generate their own vital and phantasmagorical adventures.
The motif of the thorn and the bramble has been a leitmotif for several years: it has interfered in the artist’s work partly because of the garden that she crosses and observes daily on the way to her studio, but also because the symbolism of the thorn fascinates her, particularly through medieval and Christian iconography and that of tales. In these, the bramble bush bristling with stingers has a pugnacious and wild character, and often represents the last rampart to cross to achieve love, galvanizing strength and resilience.
In nature the bramble is self-contained, and prickly; wearing it as jewelry is a statement.
Armelle de Sainte Marie’s work is part of the collection of the Frac Auvergne, that of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, and of various Artothèques in France. It has been exhibited in Denmark, Germany, Belgium and the United States. Her work is part of private collections in Europe and internationally.
She was represented until recently by the Jean Fournier gallery in Paris, and by the Béa-Ba gallery in Marseille.
